h20 started out as a simple idea. We wondered if there was an alternative container that would allow for clean, pure water with no risk of chemical leeching. An alternative that would help reduce the current pace of 38 million plastic bottles ending up in landfills every year. And an alternative that would be convenient for the consumer.
Julie Riettie-Atherton, Founder and President of Refreshing Ideas put it like this: “After considering some of the inherent health and ecological problems with current consumer packaging of water, I asked, why don’t they just put it in a box?” With years of business ownership and operational know-how behind her, she soon found herself asking, “Why don’t I put it in a box?” And so with Vice President Richard Atherton, bringing over two decades of international business experience himself to the table, an idea was born, and a movement was begun.

h20 natural spring water comes in an earth-friendly, award-winning, aseptic package. It’s made mostly of paper, which is a renewable and sustainable resource. And a full 100% of the paper we use comes from responsibly- managed forests that continuously grow as new trees replace the harvested ones. In fact, our package is the only aseptic package to win the Presidential Award for Sustainability.
And our packaging is easily recyclable (58 million U.S. residents have access to carton recycling and 22 billion cartons were recycled in 2007 alone), providing an ecological alternative to standard plastic bottles, 38 million of which end up in landfills every year.
And it’s not just that they can be easily recycled into other paper products for multiple uses (like tissue, paper towels, or cereal boxes), thus helping to save our environmental resources. It’s also that they’re easy for you, the consumer. h20 packages flatten easily to take up very little space when you go to dispose of them. And they’re very lightweight, making them easy to carry away, all of which goes to help make it easy for you to do your part to help save the planet.
Finally, our h20 cartons use significantly less energy to manufacture and transport than other packaging methods, thus aggregately reducing C02 emissions, and helping to reduce the rate of global warming. All of this, along with the fact that our packaging is 100% free from chemical leeching, is why our packaging is considered the packaging of the future. And it’s why our cartons are produced under ISO 14,001 and EMS environmental certifications.
